PW engine

Korean Air has ordered ten PW4170 Advantage70 engines from Pratt & Whitney for $200m to power its five new Airbus A330 aircraft.

Pratt & Whitney offers the Advantage70 both as a new engine option as well as an upgrade kit for existing PW4168 engines.

Under the upgrade option, the company offers a suite of technology enhancements which can be incorporated into a fleet during engine modification.

The Advantage70 technology offers improved engine performance, including a 2% thrust increase, more than 1% reduction in fuel consumption, increased durability, and reduced maintenance cost whilst delivering 70,0001b of thrust for the A330 aircraft family.

PW4170 Advantage70 is headed by a new high pressure compressor (HPC) ring case based on designs used on other members of the PW4000 family.

It has a fan tip diameter of 100in, length of flange to flange of 163.1in offering a takeoff thrust of 64,500lb – 70,000lb.

The first Pratt & Whitney PW4000 Advantage70 engines were delivered to Air Caraibes in 2009 for the liner’s A330-300 fleet.

In 2010, Malaysia Airlines ordered Pratt & Whitney’s PW4170 Advantage70 engines for $680m to power 17 new Airbus A330 aircraft, including 15 passenger and two freighter aircraft.
