Bombardier Commercial Aircraft has delivered the first of three Q400 turboprop aircraft to Irish leasing company Elix Aviation Capital.

Featuring a 78-seat configuration, the newly delivered plane is set to enter service with US-based regional carrier Hawaii Island Air by early next year.

With the new Q400 aircraft, Island Air aims to renew and expand its fleet, as well as improve inter-island connectivity.

"The reliable, operationally flexible and cost-efficient Q400 turboprop is the perfect choice to take our airline to the next level."

Hawaii Island Air CEP and president David Uchiyama said: “As we look to expand our regional route network and connect local residents and visitors across the islands,

“Additionally, the comprehensive support from Bombardier in acquiring the aircraft and integrating them into our network reconfirms our decision to utilise this manufacturer and superior product for our fleet renewal and expansion strategy.”

Offering 238 flights in a week, the airline has also deployed ATR-72 aircraft in various regional routes.

In addition, Hawaii Island Air pilots have already started a two-month training programme to become certified to fly its new Q400 aircraft.

The Q400 aircraft family currently has more than 60 owners and operators worldwide.

Bombardier has so far secured firm orders for 571 Q400 aircraft.
